votetub.com is a new online community connecting people and stimulating debate relating to social and political issues.
According to the site, users “can exchange views, vote on-line on these burning issues and as MPs vote in Parliament check if yours is voting the way you would want. We will then make your opinions felt — and the more of you who take part the more power we will have…over time you can form lobby groups or even virtual parties and be put in touch with people whose views you will either love or loathe!”
The site is the brainchild of entrepreneurs Marcus Robinson and Kate Jaggar, who wanted to create a “more socially relevant and stimulating social networking site” which would address the apathy of young voters. They claim that research shows that the 16 to 34 year old age group regularly vote in their millions on TV talent shows and yet remain impassive when it comes to politics, with less than half registered to vote at the upcoming General Election.
Marcus Robinson explains, “Our trust in MPs is at a 26 year low and there seems to be an ever widening gap between what MPs do and what we think they should be doing. And yet when it comes to us voting for what really matters, our democratic process dictates that we periodically vote for these MPs who then represent us in Parliament. We make no judgment about the low turnout in elections, and we don’t find it surprising. We simply want to make it an easy, fun and engaging experience to vote, which will, we hope, encourage people to come back and voice their opinions on the things that really matter.”
