The 2010 state CIO survey by NASCIO , Grant Thornton and Tech America and reveals interesting information about emerging technologies.  Emerging technologies can add value to public service, increase efficiencies and lower operation costs.

State CIOs and cloud computing

  • 50% are investing in cloud computing
  • 33% are running active or pilot cloud projects

State CIOs and social media

  • 66% use social media (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook)

Emerging technology ranking

When asked to rate the emerging technologies they assigned the value as follows (highest ranking listed first):

  • Cloud computing
  • Green IT
  • Social media

State CIOs and green technology

  • 46% have policies that mandate green IT
  • 92% view green technology as a way to save money on electricity
