The National Journal’s “Tech Daily Dose” reported that the FCC has recommended the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) develop a government-wide cloud strategy that addresses security and privacy concerns. This concern for cloud standards is top of mind at Microsoft, as many of our costumers at the state, local, and federal levels deal with extremely sensitive information on a daily basis.
In a recent keynote address at the Brookings Institution’s “Cloud Computing for Business and Society” Policy Forum, Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith identified some policy initiatives governments can implement to strengthen confidence in the privacy and security of the cloud. One of Brad’s main points was that the country needs a “Cloud Computing Advancement Act" that will ensure that agencies know whether and how their information will be accessed and used by service providers and how it will be protected online.
Considering the need for industry standards and stronger regulations for the cloud, the FCC’s recommendation is encouraging and looks like a good step in the right direction. And I think it will be interesting to watch this play out in the federal government space and on the state and local level too.
