Great blog by Daniel Hannan on how certain Police Authorities are fighting to prevent properly accountable local policing.

According to the Association of Police Authorities, they exist to "champion the principle of local accountability".  Yet if you read what the APA has said about directly elected Police Commissioners, they don't seem too keen on local accountability in practice.

Is it not a little odd that a publicly funded organisation like the Association of Police Authorities should be lobbying to prevent two democratically elected parties from implementing what was in their manifestoes?

They claim that there's not been enough time to discuss the idea.  It's nearly a decade since I published Direct Democracy - empowering people to make their lives better, in which I proposed directly elected police chiefs.
